S.Korea thanks DPRK for backing Yeosu's expo bid(Xinhua)
Updated: 2007-11-28 19:16 SEOUL -- South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun sent a message to Kim Jong-il, top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), on Wednesday to thank DPRK's support for South Korea's Yeosu city's campaign for holding the 2012 World Expo, Roh's spokesman Cheon Ho-seon said. Roh delivered the message via South Korean Defense Minister Kim Jang-soo, who is in Pyongyang for a three-day inter-Korean defense ministerial talk from Tuesday to Thursday, Cheon told a press conference. "The North (DPRK)'s cooperation in Yeosu's expo bid is meaningful as it is the first implementation of the eighth clause of the inter-Korean summit declaration adopted by Roh and Kim at the end of their meeting in Pyongyang in early October," said Cheon. Under a joint declaration signed by Roh and Kim in early October during their summit meeting in Pyongyang, the two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation for the interest of the Korean nation and the rights and interests of overseas Korean nationals in the international arena. The southern coastal city of Yeosu was elected as the host city of the 2012 World Expo on Monday. |
