Updated: 2007-11-14 18:48 YANGON - Two ethnic organizations in Myanmar, in their latest announcements published in Wednesday's official media, have criticized the ethnic part of a recent statement of Aung San Suu Kyi, while welcoming the recent talks between the government's Liaison Minister U Aung Kyi and Aung San Suu Kyi, detained political party leader. The full text of the announcements of the Union Pa-Oh National Organization (UPNO) and Pa-Oh National Organization (PNO) of Special Region-6, both based in northern Shan state's Taunggyi, were carried on the official newspaper New Light of Myanmar. The organizations' announcements charged some points of the statement of Aung San Suu Kyi, General Secretary of the National League for Democracy (NLD), with implying that she and her party will represent ethnic groups, rejecting her offer as she did not seek the organizations' opinions. Pledging readiness to cooperate with the government to make the process of a dialogue a success in the interest of the nation, Aung San Suu Kyi said in her November 8 statement released in Singapore by UN Special Envoy Ibrahim Gambari on her behalf, that "In this time of vital need for democratic solidarity and national unity, it is my duty to give constant and serious considerations in the interests and opinions of as broad a range of political organizations and forces as possible, in particular those of our ethnic nationality races," adding that "To that end, I am committed to pursue the path of dialogue constructively and invite the government and all relevant parties to join me in this spirit." The two organizations, which attended the constitutional national convention that ended on September 3 as the first step of the government's seven-step roadmap, expressed support in their announcements for drafting a new constitution based on the detailed basic principles adopted in the national convention and assured to join in the implementation of the state's roadmap in cooperation with the government and the people. |
