Notes
J.R. Smith might be a little bitter
J.R. Smith, the league's second-leading scorer and the top import in Zhejiang Golden Bulls history, apparently refused to shoot in the first half of the team's 101-98 home victory over the Tianjin Gold Lions on Sunday following criticism he'd shot too much in the team's previous game on Friday.
He scored two points in the first half - both on free throws - and lay mostly dormant as Tianjin staged a fierce rally in the third quarter. Although he scored 29 points in the fourth quarter to seal the win, Smith's attitude angered coach Ding Wei.
"I don't know what he was thinking in the first half," Ding said. "He didn't tell me (he wasn't willing to shoot). It's not gonna work for the team's benefit."
Smith's behavior may have been in response to complaints from fans after a 101-98 loss to the Beijing Ducks on Friday, according to the league's official website.
Despite his 43 points - 13 more than fellow American Stephon Marbury of the Ducks - fans criticized the former NBA player's style as selfish.
Smith responded on his micro-blog on Saturday, saying "sorry to all of my teammates and fans about the game last night! If you feel I shot too much, I'll make it up. I won't shoot a single shot tomorrow! Just rebound, play D and pass".
Ding said on Monday that Smith told him after the game he was feeling ill. But Smith told the press "it's not the time for me to shoot in the first half".
The former Denver Nugget saluted Marbury after missing a 3-pointer at the buzzer that would've tied the game.
"Great game! Hate losing but it's still a long season. I take my hat off to Stephon Marbury. Great leadership," Smith said on his micro-blog.
