Despite the success of the rescue operation, the authorities should investigate the Wangjialing mine disaster and punish the culprits in order to prevent the recurrence of such tragedies, says an article in Information Times. Excerpts:
Rescuers have saved 115 of the 153 miners trapped inside Wangjialing Coal Mine.
As more and more miners were rescued, the media turned their attention to survivors and rescuers instead of the mine disaster per se. But the media should not forget to press for a proper investigation into the causes of the accident.
It's true that 115 miners were rescued in Wangjialing, but such a need arose only because of a man-made tragedy. There's nothing for the officials to feel proud of. Officials in charge failed to train the miners in important safety aspects that led to the disaster in the first place. We hope that all the miners trapped in the coal mine survive. But even if that miracle were to happen, the authorities should not let the people responsible for the tragedy get off scot-free.
