The first Datong International Biannual Fresco Exhibition kicks off on Sept 26 in Datong, Shanxi province. The exhibition will last for five months until Feb 28, 2013.

Five-hundred works will be shown at the exhibition, including murals of Huayan Temple and Shanhua Temple in Datong and copies of frescos at the Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, Xinjiang Kizil Grottoes and Gansu Maijishan Grottoes. Works from national fresco artists and foreign artists from Russia, Japan and South Korea will also be on display.

The event offers a rare chance to look at exquisite frescoes from the late 1970s, a period considered the “Chinese fresco renaissance”. The event also provides an opportunity to appreciate pioneering artwork by contemporary young and middle-aged Chinese artists.

Visitors can appreciate frescoes with three-dimensional effects at the exhibition. The artwork To See a World in a Grotto depicts the original charm and features of the No 17 Grotto in Kizil, in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, through high precision reproduction and three-dimensional technology. After entering the grotto, visitors will lose themselves in the exquisite and vivid frescoes surrounding them. It takes three years to complete the artwork, and this is the first time it will be shown to the public.

An art exhibition honoring outstanding graduates who have been awarded the Zeng Zhushao Sculpture Art Scholarship will also be held at the same time. Sponsored by the China Central Academy of Fine Arts, the China Sculpture Institute and the Sculpture Committee of the China Artists Association, the exhibition will present excellent works from young Chinese art students.
