This is the first Peking opera version of the historic event, which changed the course of Chinese history but resulted in Zhang's imprisonment for the rest of his life.

Last year the opera won the 15th Wenhua Award, the top arts award granted to professional performers by the Ministry of Culture.

Established in January, 1955, the China National Traditional Peking Opera Company is one of the national ensembles of performance arts directly supervised by the Ministry of Culture. Since its founding, the theater has brought together a large number of outstanding performing artists and playwrights, directors, composers, and stage artists.
