A rare pygmy slow loris was found by a farmer named Hao Qingfa sleeping on a pile of peaches in his orchard on July 8 in the village of Fenghuangshan in Qian'an, Hebei province.
Not only is the chipmunk-sized mammal rare, the fact that it was found in northern China several thousand kilometers from its tropical rainforest habitat of southern Yunan Province is also a mystery.
A local forestry official theorized that it may have been a pet that escaped or was released by its owner. It is a protected species in China and its habitat is threatened by logging.
