The Kempinski Hotel in the city of Guiyang, Guizhou province decided to greet Earth Hour, a move that was started by the World Wildlife Fund in 2007, on March 19, with a special activity that consumed no electricity, by turning off the lights in public areas of the hotel for one hour and encouraging customers to join the activity by switching off or turning down air conditioning and lights in their rooms. Amidst all that darkness however, there was a band playing.

In commenting on the activity, the hotel's GM said, "We expect to raise the staff and customers' awareness of the need for environmental protection," then added that they advocate a low-carbon, green lifestyle for low-carbon energy-saving and social responsibility.
