More than 300 companies and 130 institutions combined to display hundreds of projects

The latest achievements in technology were showcased at the 2019 National Mass Innovation and Entrepreneurship Week's Beijing venue on June 13-19, reflecting the capital's innovation strengths.

Located at the Zhongguancun Exhibition Center, the event attracted more than 300 companies and 130 science and technology service institutions, displaying over 300 innovative projects in seven exhibition sections with different themes. The themes included innovation, entrepreneurship and innovation ecology as well as Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei integrated innovation.

According to the Beijing Development and Reform Commission, the capital has made great progress in innovation and entrepreneurship in recent years. Its average number of invention patents owned by per 10,000 people, a key index to measure a region's innovation capacities, ranked at the top nationwide for five consecutive years.

The research and development funds of Beijing surpassed 160 billion yuan ($23.26 billion) last year, up 22 percent compared to 2015. That tally also ranked first in China.

The innovation results showcased at the exhibition covered artificial intelligence, medical health, 5G and other sectors, which will benefit people's lives in many aspects.

Called Ovis and developed by AI company ForwardX, a walking luggage at the exhibition caught visitors' attention.

According to Yuan Yuan, head of the company's marketing brand, luggage can follow in the range of 20 to 30 centimeters on the side of its owner. A camera on the handle of the luggage can identify the owner and its built-in ultrasonic sensor can help to accurately avoid obstacles.

The luggage is also equipped with a GPS tracker, which allows users to check their locations and battery usage via the Ovis app. When people hold the handle, the Ovis will enter manual mode.

Wqsci, a high-tech company based in Beijing, showcased two special black wheels - an intelligent dustbin-monitoring terminal and an intelligent sewer cover-monitoring terminal. The dustbin terminal can monitor the garbage volume and some abnormal conditions.

According to the company, a total of 1,800 intelligent dustbin monitoring terminals have been used at the venue of the 2019 Beijing Expo. Sanitation workers need only to check through the monitoring system and clean up the dustbins.

Li Bo, founder of the company, said the intelligent dustbin monitoring system can help cut labor costs in half by improving the working efficiency.

Horizon Robotics, a robot technology R&D company based in Beijing, showcased its artificial intelligence vision chip featuring high performance, low cost and low power consumption.

A vehicle with the chip can collect real-time information of surroundings and analyze data at the terminal to ensure the car can recognize lanes, traffic lights, passersby and other non-motorized vehicles.

The chip can also help analyze the interior environment of the car. In case of driver fatigue, phone calls or other dangerous driving behaviors, the system will automatically identify and remind the driver of the hazard, according to Chen Yao, director of government affairs of the company.

Horizon Robotics has reached an agreement with ride-hailing provider Shouqi Limousine and Chauffeur to use the chip to manage its driver team.

Beijing has also made efforts to promote coordinated innovation development in Tianjin and Hebei province.

Over the last five years, the capital signed technology contracts valued at 78.02 billion yuan in total with Tianjin and Hebei, with average annual growth of 28.6 percent. By April, Beijing companies had set up 75,119 branches in the two regions.
