Zhongguancun Fengtai Science Park is home to 133 global leading and private rail transit enterprises covering the whole industrial chain from research and development (R&D), product design, rail track construction, operations and station management.

Time-honored brands, such as CRRC Corporation Limited (CRRC), China Railway Engineering Corporation (CREC) and China Railway Signal & Communication Co (CRSC), have all set up operations in the park.

"Historically, enterprises, such as CREC and CRRC, started their businesses in Fengtai in the 1960s and 1970s," said Sun Yongwen, deputy director of the park's administrative committee. "It laid a solid foundation for following development."

CRRC has engaged in three fifths of China's urban rail projects and China Railway Construction Engineering Group (CRCEG) has been involved in some 200 large-scale station buildings.

Fengtai Science Park in Zhongguancun is the hotbed for core technologies and products, exporting them to Europe and other countries around the globe.

With its core automatic train operation systems technology developed by Traffic Control Technology Co Ltd (TCT), Beijing's driverless Yanfang metro line is China's first fully automatic driverless system with independent intellectual property rights.

Major research institutions and incubators have united in the park, facilitating the transformation of cutting-edge technologies into products.

On-board speed and distance measurement technology was the last hurdle before the Harbin-Dalian line could open to the public. With the aid of overseas enterprises, the problem was mastered, according to Jiang Ming, a CRSC technician responsible for the train's signal and communication systems.

"We shuttled back and forth between a target destination and the laboratory in Fengtai Science Park, and finally worked out the solution," said Jiang.

The country's first, and the world's first, high-speed rail running through an extremely cold region was officially opened on Dec 1, 2012. The train's control system is often compared to the central nervous of a human brain, and guarantees safety of transportation.

In 2013, CRSC organized a total of 3,000 technicians to work on the train control systems of the C3 high-speed rail and urban rail's CBTC (communication based train control). Three years later, technical equipment for high-speed trains and metro train operation control systems saw complete automatization and 100 percent localization.

CRSC has set up three world first-class laboratories and 48 special laboratories, most of them opening to other enterprises. The park will offer them subsidiaries. "Such practices will greatly improve the efficiency of facilities and help reduce the cost of small enterprises," commented Sun.
