Updated: 2010-06-13

Dawenkou Cultural Sites of Gaixia in Guzhen county was selected as top 10 national archaeological discoveries in 2009.

When the fifth "China Cultural Heritage Day" is approaching, "2009 National Top 10 Archaeological Discoveries," jointly voted by expert panel from the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, 104 members from the Archaeological Society of China and 63 qualified units of the national archaeological excavations, was announced on June 11 in Suzhou.

It is learned that Gaixia prehistoric site is located in the north of Haocheng town, Guzhen county, and in the southern bank of Nantuo River. It is called "Bawang Town" by folks.

It was listed as a county-level cultural relics protection unit in 1980 by Guzhen County Government, and it was also listed as a provincial cultural relics protection unit by the provincial government in 1986.

In order to provide a lot of detailed information on planning, from 2007 to 2009, the Provincial Institute of Archaeology has carried out archaeological excavation in Gaixia for four times with explored area of up to 1,000 square meters. Experts believe that Gaixia is the earliest cultural sites of Dawenkou culture and it is also the earliest city in the middle and lower reaches of Yellow River and the valleys of Huaihe River at that time, which plays a important role in the study of historical and cultural value of the valleys of Huaihe River.
