25 years of fighting cancer

Updated: 2009-10-28 10:49 The Cancer Foundation of China (CFC) marked its 25th anniversary in Beijing on Sunday. An independent, non-profit organization, CFC has raised 200 million yuan ($29 million) for cancer control in China since its establishment in 1984. Its program for early detection and treatment of six kinds of cancers has covered more than 250,000 people throughout the country. According to a 2008 survey by the Ministry of Health, the cancer mortality rate has risen by 83.1 percent over the past 30 years in China. The disease has emerged as the leading cause of, and the second most important reason in, deaths for urban and rural residents respectively, accounting for 22.3 percent of all deaths. |
