Firm awards employee for clearing civil services

The general manager of a firm in Wuhan, capital of Hubei province, awarded 5,000 yuan to a staff who got recruited as a civil servant.

Chen Juntao of the Wuhan Air-Blower Company said it was his honor to have worked with Jiang Shushan, who was recruited in the city's department of public security last month.

Street peddler, 92, turns chengguan surprisingly soft

Hubei province's chengguan, or urban management officers, developed a rare soft corner for a 90-year-old street peddler, trying to support her paralyzed daughter.

Every morning, Li spreads out a sheet on the pavement of Wuchang's Yanzi road, selling various kinds of scissors and nail clippers.

All the illegal peddlers have been driven away from this busy street. But Li sits there without a care for the law.

And the chengguan doesn't have the heart to snatch away her livelihood.

Li, a widow, comes from a remote village in Huanggang and gets no pension. Her 72-year-old daughter is completely paralyzed.

Zhou Shurong, director of the city's chengguan department, said it would be a "moral crime" to remove her from the street.

Strangely named wine makes father-in-law mad

A man got his father-in-law extremely angry when he gifted him a bottle of expensive Hennessy wine and two cartons of Baihe cigarettes on his birthday in Zhengzhou, Capital of Henan province, last Tuesday.

Wang mispronounced the name of the wine, saying Xuannisi, which means "pick you die," as well as the cigarettes, saying Baihuo, which sounds like "you have wasted your life."

Man, 52, to marry woman he detained for 18 years

Police in Roncheng, Henan province, caught up with a 52-year-old man who "illegally detained" a woman in his house for 18 years and had a 2-year-old son with her.

Hong was, however, released later on the condition that he will marry Zheng Huacai, 38.

Hong first saw Zheng, a homeless, wandering in his village 18 years ago and took her home.

He spent all his life savings on treating her mental disorder and taking care of her.

Police informed Zheng's father that they had found his missing daughter. He has given his nod for the marriage.
