Two nude paintings of the Irish Prime Minister have been taken off show after they mysteriously appeared at different Dublin galleries.

A portrait of Brian Cowen on the toilet appeared at the city's National Gallery while another featuring the Prime Minister holding his underwear turned up at the Royal Hibernian Academy.

A National Gallery spokeswoman said: "It was not authorised to be on display and garda [Irish police] are investigating. We don't want to make more of it than it is."

A woman who saw the painting at the Royal Hibernian reportedly offered to purchase if from the gallery.
