The BBC Philharmonic is a professional broadcasting symphony orchestra based in Manchester, England. It is one of five radio orchestras maintained by the British Broadcasting Corporation.

The BBC Philharmonic Orchestra New Year Concert

Like all BBC performing groups, the orchestra contributes to the schedule of Radio 3, recording at Studio 7 of New Broadcasting House on Oxford Road, Manchester. Since 1996, most of the orchestra's live performances have been at the city's Bridgewater Hall, although it frequently tours the UK and internationally.

Anecdotally, the 'BBC Phil' is known as the most adventurous of the BBC orchestras, and has a younger demographic of players. It has always embraced contemporary composers, working with Copland, Walton and Berio amongst others. Since 1991, the orchestra has appointed a British composer/conductor - Peter Maxwell Davies held the post until 2000, before being succeeded by James MacMillan. The orchestra also had a long-standing relationship with Sir Georg Solti.

The BBC Philharmonic has made over 150 recordings, and for the most part, it has steered clear of orchestral 'warhorses'. Series of British film music, the music of George Enescu, and Stokowski's Bach transcriptions have been featured, all on the Chandos label.

Vassily Sinaisky Vassily Serafimovich Sinaisky is a Russian conductor and pianist. He has since January 2007 been the principal conductor of the Malmo Symphonic Orchestra in Malmo, Sweden. He currently lives at Bachstraat in Amsterdam, nearby the Concertgebouw.

He studied conducting with Ilya Musin at the Leningrad Conservatory and began his career as Assistant to Kirill Kondrashin at the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1973 he won the Gold Medal at the Karajan Competition in Berlin

Sinaisky was Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra from 1991-1996. He has also held the posts of Chief Conductor of the Latvian Symphony Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra. He was also appointed Music Director of the Russian State Orchestra (formerly Evgeny Svetlanov’s USSR State Symphony Orchestra), a position he held until 2002. Sinaisky has been Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic since 1996, and is a regular and popular visitor to the Proms each summer.

In 2004/5, Sinaisky enjoyed great praise for his debut with the London Philharmonic, while his conducting of a new production of Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk at the Komische Oper Berlin also received unanimous critical acclaim in the German press. (Information Courtesy of Wikipedia)
