Triple threat(cityweekend.com)
Updated: 2008-02-27 17:21 ![]() Spanning nearly an entire wing on the upper echelons of uber-posh Season's Place is South Beauty restaurant chain's newest uber-posh SUBU. Designed by Danish designer Johannes Torpe, SUBU was hyped well before its launch earlier in December. The mammoth restaurant, styled with Kubrick’s “2001: Space Odyssey” in mind, consists of an open triangular dining room flanked by pod-like private rooms sequestered from the main dining room by a wall of clear glass. The entire effect, when combined with the angular ceiling poles of Seasons Place, made us feel like we were eating at Pudong International Airport sometime circa the 22nd century. With three menus listing Cantonese, Sichuan and Sashimi, we felt grateful that the waitstaff kindly made our dining choices for us. When going to a new restaurant you want to try everything and luckily for us, the portions at SUBU were so delicate that we were able to order an entire array of dishes without feeling wasteful. The braised sweet ribs (RMB68) were a fragile pile of bite-sized meat. The wine-infused edamame were three neat, little stacks of perhaps 6 bean pods each (no getting drunk there). So in the end, does the restaurant live up to all the hype? To that, we can only answer: it’s a sight that must be seen to be believed. SUBU |
