In
China, being a single mother is looked down upon in society. Many single mothers
hide their real identities. However, in Beijing, a young single mother-to-be has
set up a blog to record her pregnancy, causing a fierce debate among Internet
users.
The woman who calls herself "Diguazhu," or "Potato Pig," broke up
with her boyfriend a couple of months ago. However, after learning about she was
pregnant, she decided to keep the child and raise it on her own.
This August, "Diguazhu" started her online diary, which she says is a way to
record her baby's development and share her pregnancy stories with her friends.
In the diary, she calls her child "Zhuwa," or Piglet. In it, she talks about the
baby's every single move. "Diguazhu" hopes the diary will be a good memory for
her child and herself.
The woman is expected to give birth to her beloved "Zhuwa" next month. As a
journalist for a famous newspaper, she has to keep working and conduct
interviews all around the city.
Though optimistic about her future life, Diguazhu's deeds have provoked
different reactions in society. Some have left sympathetic comments on her blog,
while others worry about problems like money and education they might encounter
in the future. Detractors say that she is irresponsible to give birth to a child
without a father.
Regardless of whether readers are for or against the woman's deed, Diguazhu's
blog has received 500,000 hits in two months.
