On December 12, 1936, Chiang Kai-shek, the leader of the Kuomintang was suddenly arrested and kidnapped by Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng. Prior to the Xi'an Incident of December 1936, Zhang tried to persuade Chiang to fight Japan when Jiang celebrated his 50th birthday in Luoyang on October 31, 1936.
