The pileup, involving 11 buses, eight cars and three trucks, took place at about 4 am on the expressway near the county of Sansui, and it led to a brief suspension of traffic, a police spokesman said.

Ice had made the road slippery when the accident happened, the spokesman added.

The injured people have been rushed to hospital.

An investigation into the cause of the accident is under way.
