China raises pension for martyrs' families

BEIJING - The State Council, or China's Cabinet,Thursday announced a revised version of martyrs' families pension regulation.

Premier Wen Jiabao has issued a State Council order to approve the promulgation of the new regulation, which is set to take effect on August 1.

Citizens killed while conducting police investigations into illegal activities, national security missions, anti-terror or emergency cases, disasters rescue, protecting national assets, will be named as martyrs, according to the regulation.

The regulation, which is a revision to the original one adopted in 1980, also provides that those who die on diplomatic missions, international aid and peacekeeping missions, and arm research missions will be acknowledged as martyrs.

The new regulation also improves and standardizes the current pension levels for martyrs' families.

The revision also stipulates preferential treatments for the martyrs' family members in accessing health care and education services.
