BEIJING - Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang on Thursday stressed that more efforts must be made in beefing up safety measures in areas such as coal mining and transportation that often suffer deadly accidents.

Zhang also highlighted non-coal mines, bridges, tunnels, construction, fireworks and dangerous chemicals as fields in which safety measures need to be strengthened.

"In some regions, major accidents have been rising, and this is because safety measures and supervision are inadequate," the vice premier said at a national work safety conference.

He called for intensified efforts to crack down upon illegal production and inaccurate reports of safety incidents. Also, more safety training and education should be enhanced at working places, he noted.
