BEIJING -- China's National Population and Family Planning Commission said it plans to spend 9.56 million yuan ($1.48 million) on government-funded overseas trips, vehicles and receptions in 2011.

In a statement posted on its website on Monday, the commission said its budgets for government-funded overseas trips, vehicles and receptions this year stand at 4.94 million yuan, 1.84 million yuan and 2.78 million yuan, respectively.

At least a quarter of the central government's 98 departments have disclosed their expenses for overseas trips, receptions and the purchase and maintenance of official vehicles.

The Chinese public believes that expenses on the three items are "sources of corruption and waste" and have demanded more transparency in the budgets of central government departments.

The State Council, or China's Cabinet, has repeatedly called on its ministries to publicize their budget information and "provide greater details" regarding such expenses.

According to the statement, the commission spent 4.7 million yuan on overseas trips in 2010. It spent 1.94 million yuan for vehicle purchases and maintenance and 2.63 million yuan for receptions last year.
