TAIYUAN - Twelve miners were confirmed trapped underground after a coal mine explosion Tuesday afternoon in Yuxian County, north China's Shanxi Province, local authorities said.

The gas explosion occurred at 4:50 p.m. when 41 miners were working underground at the Chendong Coal Mine. Altogether 29 people were lifted to the ground.
Rescue work and an investigation were underway, said a spokesman with the city government of Yangquan which administers Yuxian County.
