Digital museum to showcase minority embroidery, clothing

GUIYANG - A digital museum showcasing thousands of embroided artworks will open in 2011 in southwest China to preserve traditional ethnic art, the project's director said Tuesday.
A database on minority embroidery art will contain needleworks from the Miao ethnic group - the fourth largest of China's 56 ethnic groups - from across eight provinces, said Yang Xiaohui,the database's project director from the provincial culture and art research institute in southwest China's Guizhou Province.
Readers will access the database to learn the history, features and artistic value of Miao embroidery, Yang said.
The project, sponsored by the National Social Sciences Fund, began in October 2008 and is expected to be completed within three years, Yang added.
There are about 9 million Miao in China, and nearly half of the population lives in Guizhou Province.
