Chen Kangbing barged into Leicheng First Primary School in Leizhou City and started attacking at around 3 p.m. before police seized him.

All the victims were rushed to Leizhou People's Hospital. They are in a stable condition, said Li Changwu, secretary of Leizhou Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China.

The 16 students were fourth or fifth graders and the injured art teacher is male.

The victims suffered wounds to their heads, backs and arms, Li said.

The attacker is a teacher at Hongguan Primary School in the city's town of Baisha. He is being questioned by police.

Li said the previously reported number of injured, 19, was wrong because of confusion at the scene.

Experienced doctors from Guangdong Medical College were dispatched to the hospital to help treat the injured, Li said.
