Armed police dispatched to quake-hit area in Qinghai

Six hours after the 7.1-magnitude earthquake in Yushu county, western Qinghai province, about 3,700 armed police of Qinghai have been dispatched to start rescue operations, Voice of China reports.

According to Xie Caishu, Qinghai armed police corps captain, more than 600 armed rescuers have arrived in Yushu. Another 2,000 people made up of soldiers and residents of Xining, capital of Qinghai, are on their way.

Disaster relief gear and equipment are in urgent need at present.

“The need of relief equipment far exceeds supply, including tents, temporary housing, mobile kitchens, power generators. We have reported it to higher levels, who guarantee that relief supplies will be airlifted to Yushu in hours,” Xie said.
