Chinese mayor commits suicide; murder ruled out

FUZHOU - The mayor of an eastern Chinese city committed suicide by jumping from a building Thursday morning, local authorities said, stressing he was not murdered.

Zhang Guosheng, 54, mayor of Putian City, Fujian Province, was rushed to hospital after the incident, a spokesman with the Publicity Department of the Putian Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China said.

Police have ruled out murder, an official of the provincial government said.

Online rumors said Zhang committed suicide after he was implicated in an investigation by discipline authorities, but the official said Zhang was not under investigation.
