Windows Live Messenger, or MSN Messenger, saw major malfunctions on Tuesday. Users from all over the country complained that their friends, co-workers and relatives saw them as "offline" when they were actually logged on, the Beijing Times reported on Wednesday.

"I tried to change my status to available, busy or on leave, but it didn't help," a user surnamed Liu said. Users were still able to chat through MSN, but had trouble sending files.

A source with MSN China said the company had noticed the problem and similar incidents were also detected elsewhere in the world. The company reported the incident to its US headquarters and was awaiting a solution.
