Shanghai: Six people died and eight others were injured in a fire at a recycling center in Shanghai Sunday, local authorities said. The fire started at about 4 pm in a workshop at the recycling center in the Qingpu District, a government spokesman said.

More than 140 fire-fighters and 13 fire engines were dispatched to fight the blaze, the spokesman said.

An initial investigation showed the fire was triggered by an explosion of a chemical container made of plastics and metal during the waste treatment process, the spokesman added.

Local police, work safety and fire-prevention authorities are continuing their investigation into the accident.
