The culture-rich tradition of China's Spring Festival should be on the country's top list of potential nominees for World Intangible Cultural Heritage status, Feng Jicai, one of China's famed novelists, wrote for the international edition of People's Daily on Thursday.
Feng, deputy chairman of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, said the national excitement about the traditional festival, especially the ritual annual homecoming, is a precious "Spring Festival Culture" worthy of preservation.
He praised the government's policy adjustment of traditional holidays, including the Tomb Sweeping Day, Dragon Boat and Mid-Autumn festivals, as well as the about-face on firecracker restrictions in cities.
Feng said the decisions catered to the conventions of Chinese culture, giving the centuries-old tradition more prominence on the public agenda.
