The official ceremony heralding the establishment of the new town - Yongchang town, in replacement of the earthquake-affected Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County seat, was held on January 31, 2010.

Yongchang Town is constructed with aid from Shandong provincial authorities. Up to now, 400,000 square meters of residential housings have been completed.

Thirty-six main roads in town are also open to use, which provide convenience to further people’s livelihood and boost infrastructure construction.

It is estimated, with the new coming Beichuan town, the population of Yongchang town would reach nearly 40,000 by 2010, and the amount of land used for urban construction will reach three square kilometers. By 2020, the population in this town will exceed 70,000, and the area of urban construction land would be seven square kilometers.

In November 2008, the State Council approved the new reconstruction venue at about two kilometers eastward of Anyang town. This new town marks the continuous undaunted spirit of Beichuan people, and becomes a culture relic for the devastating earthquake in Sichuan in 2008.
