China deals with 200,000 counterfeit cases in 2009

BEIJING: China's quality watchdog said Tuesday more than 200,000 cases involving making and selling counterfeit and shoddy goods were investigated and dealt with in the first 11 months of 2009.

The value of involved commodities totaled 3.37 billion yuan (490 million US dollars), and 140 of the 200,000 cases were referred to public security departments, said the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ).

The commodities involved in the 519 major cases covered 21 categories including food, agricultural production materials, building materials, home appliances, mobile phones and auto parts, with a total value of more than 1.8 billion yuan.

The GAQSIQ dispatched 1.92 million quality supervisors in 2009 to conduct quality inspection on products relating to people's health and property safety, and the nation's economic security.
