Preliminary investigations have shown that a family conflict led to the murder of six people and injuries to four others yesterday morning in Qinghe county, Hebei province, police said.

The suspect, Chen Qian, committed suicide by jumping off a residential building after he was cornered by the police, according to a statement issued by the Public Security Bureau of Qinghe.

Chen, around 30, was suspected of killing six people - three males and three females - with a blunt utensil yesterday morning, police said.

The bodies were found at the home of Chen's uncle, Zhuang Rongchang.

Zhuang, a well-known local businessman, and his wife were not among the victims, China News Service reported.

The police rushed to the spot after receiving the report at around 9 am, but the suspect had fled by then, they said.

Chen took with him a shotgun and more than 10 bullets before fleeing.

On the way, he fired at four of his relatives, injuring them.

Over 100 policemen chased him and surrounded the building in which he tried to hide.

At around 10 am, Chen jumped from the roof of the building and died, local police said.

Chen was believed to have taken revenge over family disputes, and investigations are on, police said.

The murder follows several recent cases in which family members have been killed.

Zhang Wuli of Beijing's Daxing district killed his wife and son on Sunday.

Zhang allegedly suffered from mental health problems.

On Nov 23, Li Lei killed six family members also in Daxing district.

He was arrested five days later in Hainan province.
