Snowstorms across northeast China forced the brief closure Monday of three airports, stranding more than 1,000 travelers for hours.

Shenyang and Taiping airports were shut for about four hours, the Xinhua News Agency said. Changchun's airport, located between the two other cities, closed for a shorter period.

Visibility was reduced to as little as about 985 feet during the storm, which also forced the closure of several highways around Shenyang, about 370 miles northeast of Beijing.

Temperatures in the northeast are expected to fall as low as 1 degree above zero this week, Xinhua said.
