'Join hands to fight' climate change(China Daily)
Updated: 2007-11-20 08:04 The world should "cooperate sincerely" to fight climate change irrespective of the disparity in different countries' capabilities, the foreign ministry's special representative for climate change said Monday. But the developed countries should offer more help to developing countries to tackle the global problem, Yu Qingtai told an international seminar on climate change in Tunisia. Developing countries are the main victims of global warming because of their insufficient development, weak infrastructure, fragile ecology and environmental vulnerability, Yu said. Many developing countries, including China and African nations, have the will to take active steps against climate change but are thwarted from doing so because of their backward techniques and limited money, he said. Yu urged the developed nations to provide funds and expertise to, as well as help developing countries with capacity building to fight climate change. The three-day seminar opened on Sunday, with African and Mediterranean nations urging all countries to take the effects of climate change into account in their development blueprint. The seminar suggested a cooperative network of all countries to fight global warming. Climate change has harmed Africa the most, Tunisian Prime Minister Mohammed Gannoushi said. More than 100 world's environment ministers will meet in Bali next month to discuss a broad international pact to succeed the Kyoto Protocol. And the Chinese government will take active part in the meeting and work with other countries to push forward global coordination on climate change, Yu said. China Daily - Agencies |
