Daughter convicted of tarnishing dad's alleged mistressBy Jessie Tao (chinadaily.com.cn)Updated: 2007-02-08 15:32 Wang Jing, a daughter who built an "anti-mistress website" to publicize her father's extra-marital affair, got two-year public surveillance for tarnishing the reputation of Li Cuilian, who she claimed was her father's mistress, the Qilu Evening News reported Wednesday.
If the verdict takes effect, Wang will be put under surveillance by the police and the general public for two years, and will be subject to restrictions in variety of freedoms and rights, such as freedom of speech, of the press, of travelling. Wang, a freshman at a university in the capital city of Jinan, used the "anti-mistress website" to depict the trials and tribulations of her family that was, as she writes "derailed by a wanton father." Wang alleged on the website that her father, Wang Zhihua, had secretly kept Li Cuilian, the plaintiff, as an "ernai," or mistress, since 2003, when Li lived for about six months in the same residential complex as Wang's family under the guise of a distant relative. She did so even after her parents ended their 21-year marriage in February 2006. Li's lawyer claimed Wang's malicious allegations about her father keeping Li as a mistress, without the backing of any substantial evidence, has placed Li in the media spotlight for a long time, which has caused her great mental stress and harmed her reputation. Wang, however, argued that she had indirect evidence pointing to an affair between her father and Li. She claimed she was only reflecting on her parents' separation and the comments about mistresses on her website were from netizens who were not under her control. The court ruled that Wang's actions represented an impingement on Li's reputation and constituted slander, but ruled against the crime of libel Li had included in her suit. Both Wang and Li say they will appeal. |
