It became the world's second largest rechargeable battery manufacturer in 2003 and applications of its nickel and lithium-ion batteries for mobile phones rose to the top of the global market the same year. In 2003, BYD Auto Ltd was founded as a subsidiary of BYD Company Ltd.
Wang Chuanfu, born in 1966, studied chemistry at the Central South Industrial University of Technology and went on to earn a master's degree in 1990 from the Beijing Non-Ferrous Research Institute. Wang spent several years as a researcher, but in 1995 he entered the private sector and founded his own company, BYD Company.
