An estimate from the city government in 2009 suggested that the number of bicycles in Beijing was around 13 million. But over the past 15 years the number of those bicycles being used for journeys on the streets of Beijing has dropped by more than half. In contrast, the number of cars on Beijing's streets has increased fivefold in the same period, adding an additional 4 million vehicles to the city's 1,400 km of roads. In this video, China Daily reporter Zhang Yuchen goes out into the streets on a bike to find out what challenges the local government faces in getting more people back on to their bikes.
