China's newly proved coal reserves fall 43% in 2008

China's newly proved coal reserves in 2008 were 23.11 billion tons, down 43 percent from a year earlier, according to figures with the National Bureau of Statistics.

China is now the world's largest coal consumer. Last year the country's coal consumption was 2.74 billion tons, 3 percent higher than in 2007.

China's newly proved oil and natural gas reserves last year were 1.34 billion tons and 647.2 billion cu m, respectively.
