Since the Chinese government issued the long-awaited license for the third generation (3G) mobile phone telephony in January, China Telecom has been accelerating the development pace of the CDMA network and services to challenge market leader China Mobile.

Last week, China Telecom announced it would purchase 20 million 3G handsets from manufacturers this year.

China Telecom had 27.91 million CDMA users by the end of last year, down from 42 million when it acquired the business from China Unicom in June last year.
