China's CDMA subscription drops in 2008

China Telecom's CDMA mobile phone network lost 60,000 subscribers in December of last year while China Mobile said it gained 7.07 million users in the same period, reflecting a widening gap between China Mobile and its smaller rival.

China Telecom said its CDMA users fell to 27.91 million by the end of last year, down from 42 million users when it acquired the business from China Unicom in June last year.

In comparison, China Mobile, the country's largest cellphone operator, reported that its subscribers increased 87.91 million to 457 million last year. More than 7 million new subscribers signed on in December.

China Telecom said its fixed-line users reached 208.35 million by the end of last year, a loss of 11.98 million over 2007. But its broadband users increased 8.62 million to 44.27 million last year.
