Enterprises in the city of Datong, Shanxi province got involved in reducing the amount of pollution in the area even before the recent APEC meeting got underway, with a three-month environmental inspection campaign, after President Xi Jinping called for blue skies for the meeting site.

The inspection will continue with any industrial parks and enterprises discharging pollutants, with the key industries being coking, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, coal, coal-fired power, steel, cement, heavy metals, and poultry, as well as sewage and waste disposal.

The city also plans to raise the standards for entering the marketplace and giving harsher punishment to enterprises that don't follow the regulations, for example, by cutting off power, leveling criminal charges, or shutting down an entire production line.

This campaign will run through Jan 31, after which the city will set up a permanent check team to do examinations on a regular basis.
