Datong eliminating fire risks to protect its rabid World Cup fans

update: 2014-06-13

With Brazil World Cup 2014 kicking off this week, the Datong fire station decided to do a security check of places where fans of the football match are likely to be gathering, including KTVs, pubs and hotels, and called for improvements if needed.

Football mania has reached a fever pitch recently, but because of an 11-hour time difference between here and Brazil, the matches are shown in the wee hours and a lot of fans are getting together with friends in pubs, hotels or KTVs, which have risen to meet the demand, with some staying open all night.

So, to guarantee the safety of fans, the fire station made a check and is maintaining round-the-clock surveillance of hotels, restaurants and other entertainment venues open after midnight. If it finds any fire risks, the respective venues are ordered to rectify the situation immediately or face closure.

In the meantime, the station delivered some safety tips to fans via SMS and social networks, or on LED display screens across the city to remind them to take care. So far, some 130 places of entertainment have been checked and 73 potential fire risks dealt with.
