‘Lei Feng’ spirit in Datong

update: 2012-03-02

Sixteen taxi drivers in Datong city brought cleaning tools and carsick medicine to carry out a spirit of goodwill actions at the train station square before the coming Lei Feng Memorial Day on March 5.

Lei Feng, a Mao-era solider, remains a national cultural icon symbolizing altruism and dedication to help others.

Taxi drivers wore blue suits, cleaned the town square and helped passengers with their luggage. They provided free drinking water, paper cups and medicine for passengers.

The Datong Lei Feng group was found on March 5, 2004. Members have offered volunteer services to over 2, 000 people, which includes returning lost money and helping those in need. Their donations for the Wenchuan disaster area, south snow disaster area and impoverished students totaled 75,000 yuan ($11,887).
