Yungang Grottoes honored by ‘Advanced Unit’

Yungang Grottoes of Datong, one of three grotto temple art treasures in China has won the honor of Advanced Unit of Shanxi Cultural Industrial Development in Taiyuan on Dec 28, 2011.

The representative Song Jiantong, associate director of Yungang Grottoes Research Institute joined the conference and accepted the award.

Yungang Grottoes, as one of the three largest ancient grottoes in China, was listed in the first batch of national key units for protection by the State Council in 1962. In 2001, it was also recorded on the World Heritage List.

Datong started a project to improve the environment around the Yungang Grottoes in 2008. The project that was completed in 2011, upgraded road conditions, established a new tourism service facility and restored the historical buildings of the Northern Wei Dynasty (368-534AD).

In addition, Yungang Grottoes is developing 500 more kinds of new tourism products based on traditional ones.

As a World Cultural Heritage site for ten years, Yungang Grottoes has fulfilled its promises to UNESCO.
