The agriculture in Datong is also worth talking about. Located in the Loess Plateau, the city enjoys a temperate continental climate suitable for agriculture. Great climate conditions plus fertile land make the city a famous coarse cereals production and ecological animal husbandry base. The crops mainly comprise of millet, corn, potato, naked oat and beans. Among which, the millet of Guangling county, milk veteh of Datong county are popular both at home and abroad.

On the basis of its splendid historical and cultural heritages, Datong is developing into an emerging regional modern metropolis. Under the guide of the scientific development outlook, the local government has determined to build it into a tourist and ecological friendly city, and has explored the utilization of new energy resources.

The government will exert all efforts to convert the city from a traditional coal energy base to a new type energy base, from a traditional cultural resources city to a renowned historic and cultural city, from a traditional old industrial city to an ecological industrial power, and from a traditional trade distributing center to a modern logistics center. The government will make sure its cultural heritage is protected and modern economic development follows a strategy that’s suited to local conditions.

The city is separated into two areas. One hosts its major cultural heritages while the other seeks modern economic development. Datong will adhere to the strategy of developing industrial zones to boost its economy.

It will focus on large projects, promoting the construction of seven industrial zones covering equipment manufacturing, new medicines, new materials, clean energy, photovoltaic industry, recycling economy and metallurgical pipelines.
