Bricks
During the Warring States Period (475-211 BC), the Yue State had been producing bricks according to popular legend. After several dynasties, the bricks were being produced on a large scale, and the craftsmanship became more and more superb. By the Qing Dynasty (1616-1912), the adobe workshops had been dispersed all around China, and the craft was comparable to today’s methods.
Zhouzhuang, which was in a feud with the Yue, was also famous for its superb brick production. Its craftsmanship became more mature during the Qing Dynasty.
The adobe workshop can be divided into two parts.
The first part is a gallery, which exhibits the tools, adobe products and raw materials. It shows the functions, categories and processes for all kinds of adobe items. The production of adobe bricks reveals the wisdom, diligence and courage of Zhouzhuang's ancestors. Another is the real workshop, where adobes bricks are produced.
Tourists can watch the production process, as well as try it out for themselves.
