The world's first full-scale open source chassis for self-driving vehicles, driven by research and developed by a firm located in the Guiyang National High-tech Industrial Development Zone, was on its way to buyers in the United States, according to local media report on Feb 22.

The zone, also known as the Guiyang HIDZ, is located in the city of Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province.

The chassis for self-driving vehicles, which is named PIXBOT, was independently developed by Guiyang HIDZ firm, Flextbot.

It features L4, or highly automatic driving, operational capability.

It comes equipped with a distributed power system, accessible bottom interface and open architecture, capable of four-wheel independent steering, digital manufacturing, software definition and other operations, supporting a variety of automatic driving software stacks.

Zone officials said the first batch of chassis will be used in a joint project at Carnegie Mellon University in the US, a leading international robotics institution and delivered to smart retail customers in Dallas, Texas.

According to Cao Yuteng, the CEO of Flextbot, put simply, the PIXBOT automatic driving chassis is a wheeled robot. Based on its open source and automatic driving functions, users can easily customize vehicles with different functions.

Effected by the novel coronavirus outbreak, in order to deliver the chassis on time Flextbot resumed a small part of its production in early Febraury through the combination of remote and field work.

Some key engineers quickly improved the products, assisted by other personnel remotely.

Because the chassis manufacturing adopts the intelligent manufacturing method of 3D printing, the participation and contact of personnel are reduced to a certain extent.
