Southwest China's Guizhou province has been a major battlefield for the fight against poverty because of its poor transportation in the past. However, things have changed since the mountainous province launched the road improvement program over the past years.

Zhang Yin, head of Guizhou Highway Bureau, was invited to get the online interview of Guizhou Provincial People's Website and introduced the achievements and future plans of the road improvement program in rural areas.

By the end of 2015, Guizhou had connected all 88 counties in the province to the highway network, making it the first province in West China to achieve this. Now, it plans to make every village with more than 30 households accessible by highway by the end of 2019.

In 2018, the provincial government plans to invest some 20 billion yuan ($3.16 billion) in building more highways in rural areas. The aim for this year is to prolong the rural highways to 50,000 kilometers.
