The annual Liupanshui Summer Cultural Festival opened in Liupanshui, Guizhou province, on July 7, with 100 women performing exquisite embroidery skills during the opening ceremony.

The 100 embroidery women are all from the Bouyei or Miao ethnic group. Some of them are masters of embroidery, while others focus on wax printing, or laran in Chinese.

Selling unique handicrafts, such as embroidered bags and wax printed cloth, has become a way to help locals increase incomes.

The city of Liupanshui is known as China's "Cool Capital" due to its low average summer temperatures. Having held the festival for 14 times, the city uses the summer festival as a platform to showcase its development in economy, sports, culture and tourism to attract more visitors and investments.

Expected to last until August, the event will organize 53 activities, including a marathon, exhibitions, musical festivals and tourism forums.
